Every EV brochure promises savings. Very few show you the actual arithmetic. So here it is, with 2026 numbers, worked out the way you would on the back of a fuel bill. Whether an electric car saves you money depends on three things. Where you charge, how much you drive, and how long you keep the car. Get those right and the savings are real. Get them wrong and you bought an expensive phone with wheels.

Read that table twice, because it contains the entire EV ownership debate. Charge at home and you drive for a sixth of petrol money. Depend on DC fast chargers and the advantage shrinks to half, sometimes less.

Take a buyer doing 1,200 km a month, mostly city, charging at home. Petrol cost at Rs 7.25 per km comes to about Rs 8,700 a month. The EV at Rs 1.10 per km costs about Rs 1,320. That is a saving of roughly Rs 7,400 every month, or about Rs 4.4 lakh over five years. Even after paying the typical Rs 2 to 3 lakh premium an EV commands over its petrol twin, the home-charging buyer comes out ahead, and that is before counting cheaper servicing. An EV skips oil changes, clutch work and most of the parts that usually fail.
The costs people forget to count
- Charger installation: a home AC charger with wiring can cost Rs 25,000 to 50,000 if not bundled free with the car.
- Society permission: costs nothing, can take months. Start this conversation before you book the car, not after.
- Insurance: EV premiums run slightly higher because battery replacement is expensive.
- Battery health: most brands warranty the pack for 8 years. Keep the paperwork, it drives your resale value.
Where the government helps
GST on electric cars is 5 percent against the much higher rates on petrol and diesel cars. Several states also trim or waive road tax on EVs. Those two together quietly close a chunk of the price gap before you have driven a single km.
The verdict, without the marketing
You are a strong EV case if you have home charging, drive 800 km or more a month, and keep cars for 5 years plus.
